What is a WiFi QR Generator?
A WiFi QR generator creates a QR code that connects a smartphone directly to a WiFi network when scanned — no typing the network name or password. The Toolsiro WiFi QR Generator builds a properly formatted WiFi QR string, lets you customize the code colors for on-brand display, and exports to PNG or SVG. Your network credentials are processed entirely in your browser and never sent to any server.
How WiFi QR Codes Work
A WiFi QR code encodes a special string in this format:
WIFI:T:WPA;S:MyNetworkName;P:MyPassword;H:false;;
When a modern smartphone camera or QR scanner reads this string, the operating system recognises it as WiFi credentials and shows a connection prompt. Tapping "Connect" joins the network instantly. This works natively on iOS 11+ (using the built-in Camera app) and Android 10+ (using the built-in Camera or Google Lens). Older Android devices may require a dedicated QR scanner app.
Security Types — WPA, WEP, and Open Networks
- WPA / WPA2 (recommended): The current standard for home, office, and public WiFi security. Choose this for virtually all modern networks. WPA3 networks are also encoded with the WPA type tag for compatibility.
- WEP (legacy): An older, less secure encryption standard. If your router is old enough to use WEP, it's strongly recommended to upgrade to WPA2. Only select WEP if your network genuinely uses this protocol.
- Open (no password): For public networks, free hotspots, and guest networks with no password protection. The QR code connects directly without prompting for a password.
Hidden Networks
Some network administrators configure their WiFi to not broadcast the SSID (network name), making the network invisible in the standard WiFi list. To connect to a hidden network, users must know and manually enter the exact SSID. Enable the "Hidden Network" toggle in the Toolsiro generator to add the H:true flag to the QR code string, which tells the device to attempt connecting to a hidden network with the specified credentials.
Where to Display Your WiFi QR Code
- Offices and coworking spaces: Print the QR code on a card near each meeting room or desk area. Visitors and new employees connect instantly without asking IT for the password.
- Cafes and restaurants: Frame the QR code on tables, counters, or the menu board. Significantly reduces staff time spent on "what's the WiFi password?" questions.
- Hotels and accommodation: Print one code per room and include it in the welcome booklet or mount it near the TV. Update the code whenever the password changes.
- Events and conferences: Include the WiFi QR on the event programme, welcome slides, or physical signage at the venue. Guest networks can have rotating passwords; just reprint the QR code.
- Airbnb and short-term rentals: Print the code as a fridge magnet or framed sign. Guests connect the moment they arrive without waiting for a message reply.
- Retail and shops: Offer free WiFi for customers browsing in-store. The QR code on receipts or window stickers makes connecting effortless and increases dwell time.
- Schools and universities: Printed on student ID cards or posted at entrance gates for the guest network.
Privacy and Security Considerations
Your WiFi password is embedded in the QR code image. Anyone who scans the code — or even reads the encoded string directly — can see the password in plain text. Keep this in mind:
- Only display the QR code in physical spaces where you intend to grant access. Don't post it publicly online.
- For high-traffic environments, use a dedicated guest WiFi network with a separate password, isolated from your main internal network.
- Rotate the guest password and reprint the QR code periodically for security.
- The Toolsiro generator never transmits your password to any server — it stays in your browser. But once the QR code image is downloaded and shared, it carries the credentials wherever it goes.
Custom Colors for On-Brand Display
The default black-on-white code works everywhere, but you can customize it to match your brand. Set your brand's primary color as the foreground color and keep the background white or very light for maximum scannability. Avoid low-contrast color combinations. Always test a printed or displayed version of the custom-colored code with multiple devices before deploying at scale.
