How to Calculate a Tip

A tip (also called a gratuity) is a voluntary sum of money paid to a service worker in addition to the basic price of a service — most commonly in restaurants, but also for hotel staff, taxi drivers, barbers, delivery drivers, and other service providers. The Toolsiro Tip Calculator calculates the tip amount, total bill, and per-person share instantly from any bill amount and tip percentage, with a slider for custom percentages, support for 8 currencies, and a split-bill feature for up to 20 people. It also includes a regional tipping guide covering Gulf states, Egypt, the US, UK, Europe, and Japan.

The Tip Calculation Formula

  • Tip amount = Bill × Tip% ÷ 100
  • Total = Bill + Tip amount
  • Per person = Total ÷ Number of people

Examples:

  • USD 85 restaurant bill, 18% tip: Tip = USD 15.30 → Total = USD 100.30 → Per person (4 people) = USD 25.08
  • SAR 320 dinner, 10% tip: Tip = SAR 32 → Total = SAR 352 → Per person (2 people) = SAR 176

Tipping Norms Around the World

Tipping culture varies enormously by country and is an important thing to know when travelling internationally:

  • United States and Canada: Tipping is expected and considered part of the server's income. 15% is considered the minimum for acceptable service, 18–20% is standard, and 25%+ is for exceptional service. Not tipping is considered rude. Many US restaurants now add automatic gratuity of 18–20% for large groups.
  • United Kingdom: 10–15% is common at sit-down restaurants. Check the bill first — many restaurants add a "discretionary service charge" of 12.5%. Tipping is not expected at pubs that serve food at the bar.
  • France and Continental Europe: Service is legally included in French restaurant prices (service compris). A small additional tip of 5–10% for excellent service is appreciated but not required. In Germany, rounding up the bill is common.
  • Gulf Arab States (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain): Tipping is not culturally required but is appreciated. 10% is a common guideline at restaurants. Hotel staff, taxi drivers, and housekeeping are often tipped SAR 5–20 / AED 5–20 per service. Many restaurants in the Gulf automatically add a 10–15% service charge.
  • Egypt and North Africa: Tipping (بقشيش) is an important part of the service economy. 10–15% at restaurants is standard. Tipping guides, parking attendants, and anyone who assists with services expects a small tip (EGP 5–20 typically).
  • Japan: Tipping is considered unusual and can even be perceived as rude or insulting in Japan. Service is considered included in the price and staff take pride in excellent service without expectation of gratuity. Do not leave money on the table — it may be returned to you.
  • Australia: Tipping is not mandatory. 10% at good restaurants is appreciated. Rounding up is common for taxis and cafés.

Tip on Pre-Tax or Post-Tax Amount?

In countries that add sales tax or VAT to restaurant bills, there is a question of whether to tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total:

  • Pre-tax tipping (more common in formal etiquette): 20% of USD 80 (pre-tax) = USD 16 tip. Tax on USD 80 at 8% = USD 6.40. Total = USD 102.40.
  • Post-tax tipping (most common in practice): People often tip on the final total as displayed. This results in a slightly larger tip, which is generally not objected to.
  • In Gulf countries: If a restaurant has added a 10% service charge and 5% VAT, the printed bill may already include both. Review before adding another tip.

When to Tip and How Much — A Quick Reference

  • Sit-down restaurant: 10–20% depending on country and service quality
  • Food delivery: USD 2–5 minimum or 10–15% in the US; discretionary elsewhere
  • Taxi / rideshare: 10–15% in the US and UK; round up elsewhere
  • Hotel housekeeping: USD 1–5 per night left daily (not just at checkout)
  • Hotel porter / bellhop: USD 1–2 per bag
  • Hair salon / barber: 15–20% in US; 10% in UK; discretionary elsewhere
