Fuel Calculator — Cost, Consumption, and Range

Fuel costs are one of the largest recurring expenses for car owners, and understanding your vehicle's fuel consumption is essential for budgeting trips, comparing vehicles, and tracking changes in fuel efficiency over time. The Toolsiro Fuel Calculator offers three calculation modes: fuel cost for a trip, fuel consumption efficiency from actual usage, and estimated driving range from a tank of fuel. It supports both metric (L/100km, litres) and imperial (mpg, gallons) units, with seven currency options including major Arab currencies.

How to Calculate Fuel Cost for a Trip

The formula for trip fuel cost is straightforward:

Fuel Used (litres) = Distance (km) ÷ 100 × Consumption (L/100km)

Total Cost = Fuel Used × Price per Litre

For example, a 500 km road trip in a car consuming 9 L/100km with fuel priced at SAR 2.18/litre:

  • Fuel used: 500 ÷ 100 × 9 = 45 litres
  • Total cost: 45 × 2.18 = SAR 98.10

Understanding Fuel Consumption Ratings

Fuel consumption is measured differently around the world:

  • L/100km (litres per 100 kilometres): Used in most of the Arab world, Europe, and Australia. Lower is better. A fuel-efficient compact car might achieve 5–7 L/100km, while a large SUV might consume 12–15 L/100km.
  • MPG (miles per gallon): Used in the United States and United Kingdom. Higher is better. A fuel-efficient car might achieve 35–50 mpg, while a large truck or SUV might get 15–20 mpg.
  • km/L (kilometres per litre): Common in Japan, India, and Southeast Asia. Higher is better. Equivalent to dividing 100 by the L/100km figure.

Fuel Efficiency Ratings — What Is Considered Good?

  • Excellent (under 6 L/100km / over 40 mpg): Hybrid vehicles, small economy cars, fuel-efficient compacts.
  • Good (6–9 L/100km / 25–40 mpg): Most modern sedans, hatchbacks, and small crossovers.
  • Average (9–12 L/100km / 20–25 mpg): Midsize SUVs, pickup trucks, older vehicles.
  • High (above 12 L/100km / under 20 mpg): Large SUVs, heavy pickup trucks, sports cars, older poorly tuned engines.

Fuel Prices in the Arab World

Gulf countries heavily subsidise fuel, making petrol among the cheapest in the world:

  • Saudi Arabia: 91 Octane ≈ SAR 2.18/litre, 95 Octane ≈ SAR 2.33/litre (Aramco pricing, updated quarterly).
  • UAE: Fuel prices are deregulated and updated monthly by the UAE Fuel Price Committee. 95 Octane ≈ AED 2.50–3.50/litre depending on global oil prices.
  • Kuwait: Premium 95 ≈ KWD 0.100/litre — among the world's cheapest petrol.
  • Egypt: Fuel prices are partially subsidised. 95 Octane ≈ EGP 13.75/litre (subject to periodic government adjustment).

Tips to Reduce Fuel Consumption

  • Maintain steady speeds: Acceleration and hard braking burn significantly more fuel. Cruise control on highways improves efficiency by 10–15%.
  • Check tyre pressure regularly: Under-inflated tyres increase rolling resistance and fuel consumption by 1–3%.
  • Reduce AC usage at low speeds: Air conditioning can increase fuel consumption by up to 20% in city driving. At highway speeds, open windows create more drag than AC uses.
  • Remove excess weight: Every 45 kg of extra weight reduces fuel efficiency by approximately 1–2%.
  • Service your vehicle: A clean air filter, fresh spark plugs, and regular oil changes all help maintain optimal fuel efficiency.
  • Avoid idling: Modern fuel-injected engines use less fuel restarting than idling for more than 30 seconds.

Electric Vehicle Equivalent

For EV comparisons, energy consumption is measured in kWh per 100 km (kWh/100km). A typical electric car uses 15–20 kWh/100km. At an electricity price of USD 0.15/kWh, this works out to USD 2.25–3.00 per 100 km — roughly a third of the cost of a petrol car consuming 8 L/100km at USD 1.00/litre.
