What Is GPA and How Is It Calculated?
GPA (Grade Point Average) is the standard method used by universities and colleges — particularly in the United States, Canada, and increasingly in Arab universities — to measure a student's academic performance on a numerical scale. The Toolsiro GPA Calculator supports both the 4.0 scale used in North American and many international universities, and the 5.0 scale commonly used in Saudi Arabian universities. It calculates semester GPA from individual course grades and also computes cumulative GPA across multiple semesters.
The GPA Calculation Formula
GPA is calculated as a weighted average where each course's grade points are weighted by its credit hours:
GPA = Σ (Grade Points × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ Credit Hours
For example, on a 4.0 scale:
- Mathematics: A (4.0) × 3 credits = 12.0 quality points
- Physics: B+ (3.3) × 3 credits = 9.9 quality points
- English: A− (3.7) × 2 credits = 7.4 quality points
- Total: 29.3 quality points ÷ 8 credit hours = GPA 3.66
The 4.0 GPA Scale — Grade Equivalents
- A+ / A (4.0): Excellent — highest academic achievement. Dean's List at most US universities requires ≥3.5.
- A− (3.7): Excellent minus.
- B+ (3.3): Above average.
- B (3.0): Good — solid average performance.
- B− (2.7): Good minus.
- C+ (2.3) / C (2.0): Satisfactory. Many graduate programs require a minimum 3.0 undergraduate GPA.
- C− (1.7) / D (1.0): Below average. Passing but may affect eligibility for certain programs.
- F (0.0): Fail. Does not earn credit. Counts in GPA calculation.
The 5.0 GPA Scale — Saudi Arabian Universities
Most Saudi Arabian public and private universities including King Abdulaziz University (KAU), King Saud University (KSU), King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM), and Princess Nourah University use a 5.0 scale:
- A+ / A (5.0 / 5.0): ممتاز (Excellent)
- B+ / B (4.5 / 4.0): جيد جداً (Very Good)
- C+ / C (3.5 / 3.0): جيد (Good)
- D+ / D (2.5 / 2.0): مقبول (Acceptable)
- F (0.0): راسب (Fail)
Honours distinctions at Saudi universities typically require a cumulative GPA of 4.5 or above (out of 5.0) for First Class Honours (امتياز).
Cumulative GPA vs. Semester GPA
The semester GPA reflects performance in a single term and can fluctuate significantly based on course load and difficulty. The cumulative GPA (CGPA) is the overall weighted average across all completed semesters — this is the figure that appears on transcripts and is used for graduation honours, scholarships, and postgraduate applications.
It is entirely possible to have a low semester GPA in a difficult term while maintaining a high CGPA if previous performance was strong. Conversely, strong performance in later semesters can substantially raise a previously low CGPA.
GPA and Academic Standings
- Good Standing: Typically CGPA ≥ 2.0 (4.0 scale) or ≥ 2.5 (5.0 scale).
- Academic Probation: CGPA below the minimum threshold for two consecutive semesters. May result in dismissal.
- Dean's List (US system): Semester GPA ≥ 3.5 with full course load. Some institutions require 3.7 or above.
- Summa Cum Laude (US graduation honours): CGPA ≥ 3.9 at most universities.
- Magna Cum Laude: CGPA 3.7–3.89.
- Cum Laude: CGPA 3.5–3.69.
How to Improve Your GPA
- Repeat failed or low-grade courses: Many universities allow grade replacement, where the new grade replaces the old one in CGPA calculations.
- Take high-credit courses seriously: A 4-credit course has twice the impact on your GPA as a 2-credit course. Prioritise these.
- Early semesters matter most: Poor early performance requires sustained strong performance to overcome due to cumulative averaging.
- Seek academic support early: Office hours, tutoring, and study groups used consistently throughout the semester produce far better outcomes than last-minute cramming.
GPA for Graduate School and Scholarships
Most competitive graduate programs (Master's, PhD) require a minimum undergraduate CGPA of 3.0 (4.0 scale) or its equivalent. Top programs at leading universities typically see accepted students with GPAs of 3.5–4.0. Many government scholarships in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Egypt have minimum GPA requirements ranging from 3.0 to 4.0 out of 5.0.
